Last week, Dr. Berzin and Keri Glassman of Nutritious Life recently met and made this recipe. In case you missed it, they discussed how it’s a highly beneficial breakfast substitution for anyone doing an intermittent fast. Intermittent fasting (IF) is when you eat only during certain parts of the day. Instead of eating from the morning through dinner, say in a fourteen-hour span, you only eat during a window of to six to eight hours.
For many people, studies show that intermittent fasting leads to increased fat burning and fast weight loss while retaining muscle mass by forcing your body to use up fat stores as fuel. IF can also help to lower insulin levels, curb hunger, and positively affect heart health.
When we sleep we are naturally fasting, and switch over to using fat for energy use. So when we eat a carbohydrate-heavy breakfast, we spike insulin and stop fat-burning mode. Many of us eat a breakfast that is high in carbohydrates, which causes an insulin response immediately.
Benefits of high-fat vegan coffee
In lieu of a carbohydrate-heavy breakfast, we can substitute high-fat coffee to help us feel stable until our intermittent fast is complete and we eat our next meal. Because it has no carbohydrates, high-fat coffee does very little to increase insulin and has almost no effect on metabolism early in the morning. However, it does provide us with a quick dose of easily digestible fats that we can use as energy. This helps us to curb hunger while still continuing our fat burning from overnight.
In addition, each ingredient in this recipe has its own benefits. Coconut and MCT oil are both highly digestible and have medium chain triglycerides which bypass the liver and are not stored as fat. When we eat them on an empty stomach, the body can readily can feed the brain with byproducts, called ketones, for energy. And along with adding a flavor boost, the cinnamon in the recipe helps to further blunt blood sugar.
