How to Shop Healthy at a Bodega or Small Grocery

Whether you’re on a road trip or trying to find a late night snack, 24-hour bodegas or convenience stores are often the only option for sustenance.

Obviously, you want to make a healthy choice, but what’s actually healthy in there?

Well, here are some go-to gems that won’t make you feel gross or guilty afterward.

Look for fruits & nuts.

Fresh fruit like apples or bananas are strategically positioned by the register or in a basket. Otherwise, check out the trail mix and dried fruit section. The lower the sugar and salt content, the better.

Inspect the veggie selection.

Are there ripe avocados or good-looking cherry tomatoes on display? If so, they are perfect to have as a snack. Just give them a rinse first.

Choose a low-sugar protein bar.

If nothing fresh can be found, your next best option is a granola or protein bar that has under 10 grams of sugar if possible.

Grab hummus.

Sometimes you can find a pre-packed tub of hummus and pretzels together. This is a great option because the hummus contains chickpeas, which are high in protein .

Scope out the gluten-free options.

Gluten -free doesn’t always indicate “healthy.” However, many gluten-free products have semi-healthy ingredients such as plain popcorn with olive oil and sea salt.

Drink coconut water.

These days coconut water can be found almost anywhere. Be sure to get an unflavored version or just opt for plain old water.
